About
1000 people took part in clean up activities simultaneously
carried out in two locations around Dhaka City on Friday September
23, 2005. The locations were Manik Miah Avenue (in front of National Parliament) and Dhanmondi Lake (Rd.
8a, amphitheater). Environment & Social Development Organization
(ESDO) organized
the event.
The
aim of the event was to recognize Clean Up the World Day and
to emphasize on the relationship between culture and the environment,
which is a relationship that we do not normally talk about.
The objectives behind Clean Up Australia encouraging other countries
to take up this activity are firstly, to bring together citizens
from different places to carry out simple activities that will
positively affect local environments. Secondly, to share information
and practical experience Clean Up Australia and other clean
up organizations have developed. Thirdly, to create an international
media focus to raise awareness of governments, industries and
communities about different local environmental issues.
For
the Clean Up Dhaka events of September 23, 2005, participants
congregated in one of the two locations, formed groups lead
by Girls Guide volunteers and went to surrounding areas for
cleaning up. They were equipped with brooms, dustpans, gunny
bags, etc. In Dhanmondi, about 1000 participants took part in
clean up activities. Among these were members from ESDO initiated
Green Clubs of Ali Hossain Girls High School, West Dhanmondi
Yusuf High School, Badda Alatunnessa High School, Lalmatia Girls
College and students from The Aga Khan School.
ESDO is
a non-government, non-profit, environmental organization that
has been working to raise awareness and bring about policy change
on different environmental issues for more than a decade. ESDO
also initiated the anti-polythene movement in the country, which
resulted in the successful ban of the product.
